How to Protect Your Mobile Device from Malware

Posted by

The popularity of smartphones and tablets resulted in the proliferation of malware that is targeted toward mobile devices. It will be to your benefit to observe practices that can protect your mobile devices from these threats that can compromise your security and privacy. Below are ways how you can protect your mobile device from malware:

Do not Root Your Mobile Device

Rooting or jailbreaking your mobile device may seem to be a good idea, particularly if you want to download apps you cannot otherwise install on a non-rooted device. Premium apps that you would otherwise pay for can also be downloaded and installed for free if you root your device. Rooting your device, however, is not advisable because this can put your device more susceptible to security attacks. Rooting your device will override the security features that provide the basic protection to your smartphone or tablet. You should also be aware that rooting you device incorrectly can cause stability issues and may even render your device unusable.

Do not Download Apps from Third Party Sources

People have different reasons why they download apps from third party sources. Some people who do not want to spend money on premium apps, for example, would go to third party app sources so they can download these apps for free. There are also apps that did not make it to the official app market so they are made available for download via third party sites. If you want to install apps into your mobile device though, it is advised that you download from the official and legitimate app market. If you are using an Android device, for example, you should get your apps from Google Play and the Amazon App Store.  If you are using an iPhone or an iPad, you should download from the Apple App Store. It is not recommended to get your applications from third party app markets because you can get your device infected with malware if you download from these sites. Third party app sources are where rogue and malware-infected apps are often distributed so you increase your risks of infecting your device if you download your apps from these sources. If you want a particular app that did not make it to the official app store, you should know that these apps may not have made it to the official market because they are unstable or may have security issues that can pose problems to your device.

Use an Updated Operating System

Updates to mobile operating systems are often released to fix issues that can cause stability and security problems with your device. This means that the latest OS are often the most secure and most stable because they already have the security patches required for fixing security vulnerabilities.

Install an Antivirus App

Installing an antivirus app on your mobile device can protect it from malwares. If you use an Android smartphone or tablet, it is all the more important that you download an antivirus app because Android devices are increasingly targeted by malware makers. You can use Norton’s Mobile Security. This app can automatically scan potential threats before they can compromise your device.

 Password Protect Your Device

In case your mobile phone or tablet gets stolen or lost, it is essential that you protect all the sensitive information that is stored in it to prevent others from using this information for fraudulent purposes. You can set up your device to automatically lock up when it gets idle for some time. Anyone who needs to use your device should key in the password to unlock the device.
